Happy New Year, everyone! It's already 2019 -- how is it that time can pass so quickly, and yet each day feels excruciatingly slow?

Now that it's a new year, I might as well list some yearly goals. This year is going to be my last semester in university (if all goes well) and I'll be starting a full time job this summer. So, I don't know if I'll manage to meet these goals, but since they're all habit-based, hopefully winter break will give me a head start before classes start back up again and give me the momentum to keep going even after life gets busy.

Goals for 2019:

  • learn deliberately for an hour every day -- there's a lot of history and science I'd like to learn, but have never gotten around to it because of the sheer volume. An hour isn't bad at all, and consistency is better than bingeing Wikipedia for a whole day and then forgetting everything the next day.
  • read 10 pages of nonfiction every day -- can be combined with the previous point. I've found that just jumping around the internet trying to learn things can sort of work but isn't nearly as convenient or curated as an actual book, and I've got to actually start reading instead of constantly saying "I should read more nonfiction."
  • read 10 pages of fiction every day -- I used to read so much as a kid and practically lived in the library, but then somewhere around middle school and high school, I just stopped, probably for lack of time. Nowadays, it's a huge effort just to get through a novel, even though I can read several novels' worth of fanfics in a day or two. Granted, the stories I'm interested in now are a lot heavier than kids' books or young adult, but I hardly read at all now. I really want to enjoy reading again, even if I never get back to those days where I could blitz through several books in a day, so here we go.
  • write something every day -- in one of my writing Discord servers, there's a writing challenge channel that's just "write daily and post snippet, try to keep up a streak," and I've been really enjoying it, even if I just write one sentence. I've also joined [community profile] getyourwordsout and Write Every Day in hopes of keeping this up.
  • [bonus] draw something every day -- drawing is also one of my hobbies, and something I really want to see improvement in, but with all my other goals, I don't know if this would be the best investment of my time. If I manage to draw more this year and step out of my comfort zone, I'll be satisfied.

Since I came up with these goals pretty late today, I'm giving myself amnesty if I don't get all of these done today, but I hope to get cracking at it tomorrow. I'm feeling pretty optimistic for this year -- hopefully this will last longer than a week :P

It's a great list of goals combining enjoyment with enlarging your view of the world. Really, those are the best sort of choices. :D
